244 E. Racine Jefferson, Wisconsin  920-674-9747

History

The fifteen room italiannate mansion was built in the mid 1860's shortly after the Civil War by Charles Stoppenbach, one of early Jefferson's leading citizens. Mr. Stoppenbach was born in Cologne, Germany on December 11, 1824. He came to America in 1848, settled in Jefferson in 1851, and married Catherine Bruckner in April, 1854. They had five sons, several of whom built grand Victorian houses in the area. Charles Stoppenbach founded several businesses including a saw mill, woolen mill, lumber yard, bank, and Stoppenbach Meats, a business that thrived for decades and became one of the largest employers in Jefferson. Now owned by Doskocil, the plant currently is the largest producer of pepperoni in America.
